Zinc Plating

Zinc PlatingBarrel Line
Barrel specifications are 18" diameter by 42" length.

Barrel line has capabilities of blue-bright, yellow, olive drab and black chromates.

The capability of switching to an oscillating mode, in which the barrel rocks in a half rotation instead of a full rotation, facilitates the plating of delicate parts such as threaded or machined products.

Plating in barrels enables plating large quantities of smaller parts. This significantly lowers costs due to the elimination of costly labor when parts are racked.

Barrel CoatingConstant tumbling of parts inside the barrel creates a friction that aids in cleaning and descaling of parts.

Continuous rotation of the barrel promotes uniformity of plating over parts.

Constant filtration of zinc bath eliminates bath contamination and roughness of parts.

Regulated water flows promote waste minimization.

Progammable Hoist Line

Programmable Hoist LineProgrammable Automation

provides consistency of plating, lowers rejection rates and aids competitive pricing by reducing expensive labor.

Lustrous Metal has the largest programmable zinc electroplating line in the United States.

Tanks with dimensions of 12ft. x 8 ft. x 2 14 ft. accommodate very large and oversized parts.

Multiple hoists each have a lift capacity of 4500 lbs.

A double cleaning process ensures a cleaner part prior to plating.

THE PROCESS

Phase 1
Racking
Parts are carefully racked or positioned on custom designed racks or fixtures.

Phase 2
Pre-treat Process
Parts are pre-treated in soak, electrocleaner and hydrochloric acid baths. The soak and electrocleaner remove, dirt, grease, oil and compound left on polished parts. The acid solution loosens and removes rust and scale while activating the metal surface.

Phase 3
Zinc Plate
Parts are placed in the zinc plating bath. Dwell time is determined by the specification and configuration of the part. Plating thickness is directly proportional to time in the plating solution. Longer time in the zinc bath equates to greater plating thickness.

Phase 4
Chromate Conversion
Chromate conversion is the application of a chemical barrier over the zinc plating that increases corrosion resistance. Chromate color is dictated by job specifications and performance

Phase 5
Drying
Parts are dried with forced air to eliminate any excess rinse water.

Phase 6
Inspection, Unracking and Packing
Parts are visually inspected for color, coverage and any plating defects. Plating thickness measurements are taken with a thickness tester to ensure parts comply with customer specifications. Parts are then unracked, packed and shipped.
Process Note: Multiple rinses are used after stages two through four to prevent any cross-contamination of the baths.
